Eva Grabowsky Simon’s father went by the name Samuel Grabowsky and then later by Samuel Greene.

Family lore is that he is from Kovna Provence in Russia.

Family lore says he may have been in the Russian army.
- A Shepshel Gershon Grabovsky, son of Itsko, was registered in Jonava Draftee Reg. 51/3. 1876. (Archive KRA/I – 61/1/1429 indexed on www.JewishGen.org)

All Lithuania Revision List Index [1918] lists Shebsel and Basia as having three daughters:
- Sheyna born about 1885
- Alta born 1889
- Chava Pesa born 27 Oct 1891

They may have had another child:
Kkaim-Zelik Grabovski, son of Shebsel, died March 27, 1890 (Nisan 18) at age 1 year from inflammation of the brain. Joanava, Kaunas, Kaunas, Lithuania. (Lithuania Deaths, FHL 2331377/2 as transcribed on www.Jewishgen.org)

According to 1978 interview [115] with Eva Simon, Samuel & Morris Grabowsky left Lithuania in the last decade of the 19th century and came to the United States to peddle clothes leaving their families in Lithuania.
- A Samuel Grabowsky departed Hamburg 17 Dec 1891, arriving New York 5 Jan 1892. He was born in about 1867 and his last residence was Moetel or Mohel, Russia (Possibly Metle, Sejny, Russia, now Metaliai, Lithuania). His occupation is listed in German as “Händler” that translates into trader or merchant in English. [1919], [1920]

Samuel eventually made his way to Rhodesia, then to Benoni, South Africa and finally to Durban, South Africa. [115]

Sam came again in 1913 with daughter Eva. Listed as subject of Great Britain. Home address on Olympic manifest given as 6 Lake Ave., Benoni, Transvaal, S.A. Again they were coming to visit A. Green at same address as before. (Note: index at www.ellisisland.org for this arrival misspells Sam's name as Tam. )

1922: Entered US as Samuel Greene along with wife, Basse Greene.

Dec. 1929, attended Morton Simon's Bat Mitzvah in Pittsburgh, PA according to article in the Jewish Criterion Newspaper. It seems that he stayed in the United States and did not return to South Africa.

Headstone says 84 at time of death, which implies birth in 1854. Other sources suggest 1858.
