Isaac (Ike) Simon always called his wife “Khava" which is Hebrew/Yiddish for Eva.
In 1978, Eva said she came from Yaniva, Lithuania. According to
www.jewishgen.org, modern day Jonova used to be Yonava, Russia.
Immigrated from Lithuania to South Africa as a child. Family lore has it that she arrived in South Africa a few days after Queen Victoria’s death in January 1901.
Certificate from Benoni School says that she was 12 (or possibly 14) in 1906 that would suggest born between 1892 and 1894;
Entry to U.S. in August 1913 gives her age as 20
[926], which would suggest a 1893 birth date, but Eva told her son Morton that she had lied about her age to seem older. In fact, if one believes the Lithuanian birth record, Eva was 21 years old when she entered the United States.
1948: Lived at 5221 Wilkens, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
[927]1972: Lived at 2715 Murray Ave., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
[376]For the last several years of her life, she lived in the Jewish Home for the Aged, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
[376]Social Security death index lists her year of birth as 1897, but Miriam Alexander Baker remembers there was some question as to Eva's real birth date when she enrolled in Social Security (when Medicare was enacted).
The family chose Dec. 25, 1897 as the date of birth for Eva Simon's headstone because at that time they were not sure of the actual date.
