Bertha Struz said she was born in Sarish, Austrilick.
[37] This may be Vel’ky Šariš, Slovakia (49 degrees, 3 seconds north and 21 degrees 12 seconds east), before World War it was known as Nagysáros, Sáros, Hungary/Slovakia. Alternatively, Sarish, Austerlick could be a reference to the general region of Saros, Hungary.
Date of birth is uncertain:
- 1870 according to the 1900 U.S. Census
[29]- 1870-1871 implied by the 1910 U.S. Census where her age was reported as 39.
[38]- 1874 implied by the 1920 U.S. Census where her age was reported as 46.
[39]- 1870 -1871 implied by the 1930 U.S. Census where her age was reported as 59.
[40]- 1872 implied by the 1940 U.S. Census where her age was given as 68.
[41]- 1877 according to her death certificate where the information was provided by her son, Ben Heller.
[28]- Her eldest child, Abraham, was born in 1893. If she was born in 1877 then she would have been only 16 years old when Abraham was born. While this is possible, it is unlikely.
- Therefore, it seems more likely that she was born between 1870 and 1872 than in 1874-1877.
1900 U.S. Census says that of Bertha’s 5 children, all 5 are alive.
1907 Esther Heller’s birth certificate says that she is the 8th child of Bertha Sturz which we believe to be true but it also says that only one of these children is living that we know to be untrue.
[37]1910 U.S. Census says that of her 9 children, 8 were still alive.
[38] So there is one child who died young that has not been identified. Based on the birthdates of the other children, that child probably was born between 1904 and 1907 and died shortly thereafter.
