Notes for Morris A. “Meylakh” GREEN
Assumed to be the same as Meylakh Grabovsky b. about 1854, son of Itsik. [All Lithuania Revision List,
www.jewishgen.org]
[17]May be the Moses Grabowsky who departed Hamburg 18 Oct 1885 and arrived in New York on 30 Oct 1885. He was 18 years old and from Seyni, Russia (probably Sejny Province now part of Lithuania). His occupation was “Händler” that translates into trader or merchant.
[947] [948]May be the Meilech Grabovski, age 29 from Janova, Russia, who arrived at Ellis Island on July 17, 1893 aboard the Red Sea from Bremen. Accompanying him was his wife, M. Grabowski, age 22 and three children, Chain(2), Basdie (15) and Scheek (16). They were going to Waterbury. (
www.ellisisland.org)
- Janova, Russia matches with what would be expected
- Manifest does not say if these children were the son/daughter of Meilech. Note that if Melich was 29 when he immigrated, he would have been only 13 or 14 when Scheek and Basdie were born. This would imply that while they may have been relatives, they were unlikely that Meilech was their father.
- It is not clear if this would have been Morris’ first entry into the United States or a return trip.
1910 census says he and his wife immigrated in 1891.
1920 census says he immigrated in 1884.
Married a first cousin, according to interview with Eva Simon.
Also according to Eva Simon, Morris had a car dealership at one time.

May have had a daughter, Godia or Gutlia or Gutel Grabovski Born Sept 5, 1889 (Elul 21) to Melik Grabovski and Musa Damsker of Jonava, Kaunas, Kaunas, Liuania. (FHL 233186/5 as transcribed at
www.JewishgGen.org). This child died April 5, 1890 (Nisan 27) at age 9 months from Diphtheria (FHL 2331377/2 as transcribed at
www.JewishGen.org)
Meilikh may have a child, Benjamin-Lev born June 27, 1892 (Tammuz 14) to Melikh Grabovski and Musa Damsker in Jonava, Kaunas, Kaunus, Lithuania. (FHL 2331106/1 as transcribed at
www.JewishGen.org). This child, listed as Beniamin-Leiba Grabovski, apparently died March 30, 1893 (Nisan 25) from catarrh of lungs (pneumonia). The age of the child in the death record is reported as 10. If this is ten months, it matches up with the birth record cited here. (Lithuania Death Records, FHL2331377/2 as transcribed on
www.JewishGen.org):
This record of two children who died in Lithuania agrees with Minnie Green’s statement in the 1900 US Census that of her 6 children, 4 were alive.
