Notes for Ziche ALEXANDER (Family Lore)
According to family lore, Ziche is the father of Mordecai ALEXANDER both of whom lived in Ofalu, Saros, Hungary.

May have been born circa 1780-1790. [1232]

May be Yeshia Alexander who died 6 Aug 1866 and is buried in Opina, Slovakia (formerly Ofalu, Hungary). [1641]

From notes written by Sidney S. Alexander [1642]:
“As for the origin or our surname/ ALEXANDER, prior to the reign of Emperor Joseph II, 1765-1790, our family did not have a surname. For example, great-great-great grandfather was known as DER JUDE SICHE / the Jew Siche. During Emperor Joseph’s reign, Jews were required to adopt surnames. The equivalent of Siche in German or English is ALEXANDER. So what he did was adopt the equivalent of his name in German and we have been Alexanders ever since. I would say that this occurred about the time of the French Revolution.” according to Arthur J. Alexander

According to Isidor Alexander, Siche's parents came from Alexandria on the Main River in Germany, but no one has been able to locate this town. Another story from Arthur J. Alexander is “the family originally came from FRANKFORT, GERMANY. The then living ancestor was a HOF JUDE (COURT JEW OR STEWARD) to a German Princeling who dwelt there. When the Princeling converted to Protestantism at the time of the Reformation, as a lesser nobleman, he was driven out of Frankfort & migrated to Hungary. The then living Alexander being in his employ naturally followed.”

Siche's brother or uncle may have taken the name Frankfurter rather than Alexander when second names were required of Jews in the Austrian-Hungarian empire. [1643]
