Notes for Marcus ALEXANDER (M. Hannah Lefkovitz)
According to notes left by Arthur J. Alexander, Marcus came to the U.S. in 1884 but them may have returned to Europe for some time and then came back to the US.
[1] Marcus ALEXANDER and Hannah LEFKOVITZ arrived in the United States aboard the Werra on 22 Nov 1884. With them were six children:
- Ignatz (20)
- Bethy (15)
- Emil (7)
- Bernard (6)
- Jacob (5)
- Lina (18)
The 1900 US Census says that of Hannah’s 9 children, 6 are living. This would be the six that came over on the Werra with her. There is, however, information that indicates there might have been additional children.
Notes from Arthur J. Alexander say that Marcus Alexander and Hannah Lefkowitz were the parents of:
- Moritz
- Emil
- Leopold
- Isadore
- Jack
- Bernard
- Betty Kraus (Kross)
- Ignatz (who married Regina Alexander).
Additional notes, possibly written by Arthur J. or Morton Alexander, do refer to Uncles Isidor, Jackob and Moritz, which would mean that these are part of this family.

[349]1892: Living at 40 Pitt St.
[188] (Note that Ignatz and Regina Alexander living at 34 Pitt St. in 1920 US Census.)
There is some question as to when Marcus Alexander and his wife, Hannah Lefkowitz, were born:
- When they arrived in the United States on the Werra in 1884, their ages were recorded as 54 and 53 respectively which would put their birthdays in 1830 and 1831 [New York Passenger Lists,
www.ancestry.com]
[350];
- A Marcus Alexander died in 1892 at age 47, which would imply a birth date of 1845. This Marcus was a butcher born in Ofalu, Hungary living at 40 Pitt St., New York who immigrated in 1884. Marcus’ grandson, Arthur J. Alexander, confirmed that this was his grandfather’s death certificate.
- In the 1900 U.S. Census, Hannah, going by the name Annie, gives her age as 58, which suggests a birth date around 1842. This women immigrated in 1884 and is living with her sons, Bernhard and Leopold, and a cousin, Jacob on Pitt St., New York, NY.
[351] This matches with the family that arrived on the Werra.
13 Oct 1892: At the time of his death, he lived at 40 Pitt St., New York, New York, USA.
